I make patterns for all types clients; whether you have an awesome idea or want to create a full collection, I am here to help. I can create technical sketches, tech packs, and patterns. Essentially, everything to get the ball rolling.

Pre-production & Production

I will get the pattern ready for production, whether it be perfecting the fit or altering the design. I can build you a detailed production tech pack, pattern card, and construction notes. Also, I have relationships with Grading & Marking companies that can help you get your patterns sized and digitized.

I have been working in the fashion industry for several years. I have experience in everything from designing, development, production, technical designer, and pattern maker. I believe that having a great fit is just as important as having an excellent design. I love working with my clients and I want them to succeed. Being well-rounded, I am happy to share my resources and knowledge with my clients.

1. Where are you based?

 Downtown Los Angeles

2. How do I get the project going?

Typically, I meet with my clients in person. I always want to make sure it is a good fit for both of us. Consultations are $50 for first time meetings. Consultation usually takes about 45 minutes to an hour.

3. What’s the cost?

Please email me, jhowardpatterns@gmail.com and I can send you a general price list. I can give an accurate price once we meet and discuss your project (there is a $50 consultation fee).

4. Do you provide design consultation or design for private labels?

It depends on the project. Just ask! My time is devoted to mainly to technical design and patternmaking. I do have relationships with freelance apparel designers, textile artists, and trend consultants.

5. What is a tech pack?

A tech pack is basically all the information needed to cut and sew the garment. Everything from the type of stitches to the label placement; all the details needed to construct the garment. A technical sketch, also known as a flat, is essentially the blueprint for your garment. A production tech pack is even more detailed and will include points of

measure & specs.

6. How long does it take to get my first pattern?

Typically, 5 to 7 business days. If you are on a tight deadline, I will do my best to get it done sooner. Just let me know!

7.  I don’t know anything about fittings, patterns, can you help me fit my garment? Is there a charge?

Yes, I can help you. I charge by the hour for development fittings. For production, I can work with you on pricing if you have multiple styles to be fit.

8. Can you sew me a sample?

Typically, I do not sew samples for clients. I can refer you to a sample-maker.

9.  Can you make a costume?

I can make you a pattern for your costume and create a tech pack for the design.

However, I do not design costumes.

10. I have an old pattern that is from a previous pattern-maker, can you fix it?

It’s possible. I am always happy to take a look at it for you. If you have a sewn sample, it will speed up the problem solving process.

11. I have a vintage garment, can you replicate the design?

Yes. I can even make adjustments if you want!

12. Are your patterns digitized?

I start with a traditional dot pattern and make adjustments before the pattern is digitized. I recommend digitizing your pattern when it goes to the production stage. (if you go to production you will be provided with a digitized pattern and marker).

If you would like a digitized copy I can facilitate that,
